About My Work
I have turned many different varieties of woods. Which one do I like the best? It’s hard to say, but for grain and color both, it’s hard to beat a nice piece of Rosewood. I am able to turn items from a toothpick up to forty-eight inches in diameter. I prefer bowls and hollow forms between ten to twenty inches in diameter and urns and vases from eight to eighteen inches in height. None of my work is done from a pattern, templates or with a duplicator. Each one-of-a-kind piece is created individually by me, by hand. I use no stains, dyes, bleaches or paints, only clear finishes are used such as polyurethane, lacquer, oil or a wax. Most all turners and most all articles you read will suggest or tell you to make up your mind about a design and stick with it. If it fails get another piece of wood and try again. As my friends and family have always said, I’m a little different. I usually let the piece of wood guide me to shape, not so much in bowl form but in the urns and natural edge pieces anyway. One thing that my friend Steve Walsh said to me years ago, that I think a lot of turners, especially new turners, should remember, “it’s just a piece of wood”.
